What is Reiki?

Reiki is a natural healing system, where the universal energy of the universe is transferred, through a reiki practitioner, to the person receiving the healing. The practitioner is ‘attuned’ to act as a channel for this energy, and the receiver, at a sub-concious level, draws this energy to the areas which need it.  This is a pleasant relaxing experience for both the receiver and the practitioner.

Where did Reiki originate from?usui

Over 100 years ago Dr Mikao Usui from Japan discovered an ancient Buddhist manuscript. It told of a natural healing system that had been handed down from the time of Gautama Buddha, and practised in Tibet in the 7th century. Dr Usui used a time of retreat to fully understand the system and received ‘channelled’ instructions and pictures whilst meditating on it..This information was the basis for the form of Reiki that is taught world wide today.

Why choose Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle and safe method of healing which can be used for any health problem, whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. Reiki encourages balance and harmony on all levels. Stress, depression, anxiety, headaches, migraines, common complaints of the modern world, are relieved by Reiki treatments. More serious diseases, from diabetes to cancer, also respond well. Reiki may not fully cure an illness or complaint (though in some cases it has been known to) but it will promote relaxation and calm, encouraging and increasing the body's own natural healing processes.
Reiki will not interfere with any other medications or treatments, though it can boost their effectiveness. It complements all other types of alternative therapies and traditional medical techniques.

What to expect at a Reiki session

A Reiki session usually lasts between 40 - 90 mins. You will be asked to sit or lie down comfortably (fully clothed) and relax. Often a practitioner may have relaxing music playing and maybe incense burning to create the right atmosphere for relaxation. Dependant on the Reiki practitioners personal style, they may place their hands on you (nowhere embarrassing!) in a series of positions, normally starting at the head and finishing at the feet. Some Reiki practitioners work holding their hands a few inches above your body, and most do a mixture of both. At worst you can expect to leave a Reiki session relaxed, though a lot of people experience a lot more. Some feel the energy, some see colours or pictures and some experience a dramatic release of old emotional problems/blocks. Quite often a feeling of freedom or euphoria will stay with the person for hours of days after a reiki session. The effects of a Reiki healing session are personal to everyone who tries it, and interestingly often the most profound reports are made by the people who are most sceptical about the process before treatment. .

Please remember that Reiki is not a substitute for any medical advice and treatment. If you are unwell, please see your GP as soon as you can. Reiki practitioners are not trained in diagnosis: if you are concerned about your symptoms you should see your doctor.
